BENEFITS OF ONLINE THERAPY

Online therapy, also known as teletherapy, has become increasingly popular over recent years due to its convenience and accessibility. One of the most significant benefits is the ability to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home, making it ideal for those who may have transportation or mobility issues, as well as individuals who live in rural areas with limited access to mental health resources. Additionally, online therapy allows for greater flexibility in appointment scheduling, and eliminates the need for travel time. Many people find that they feel more comfortable opening up about sensitive topics over video or chat rather than in-person, making online therapy an excellent option for those who may feel too anxious or self-conscious to attend traditional therapy sessions.

Tips for a Great First Session

Treat online therapy the same way you would an in-person session. Make sure you are in a nice, quiet private space and focus on the session, such as your bedroom, living room, office, or car. Avoid or minimize having side conversations with friends, family members, or anyone else. This is your time, so try to make sure you have a confidential space.

  1. Make sure you have a reliable, strong internet connection. We know this isn't always possible from doing frequent telehealth sessions and meetings. But, try to minimize any outside risks if you can (i.e., having several devices connected to the same Wifi)

  2. Make sure you show up on time. I encourage clients to try to sign in 5 minutes before their scheduled time. My platform offers a virtual waiting room as you wait. You can mute your mic and turn off your camera and take the time to get settled in. Grab some water or tea, go to the bathroom, or even get comfy in your favorite spot.

  3. Ensure your laptop, phone, or computer is charged, or you can access a charger if needed.

  4. I strongly recommend, although not required to, using headphones. This helps to increase your privacy. It can also provide a more transparent sound from a therapist.
