What is OCD?

OCD is characterized by obsessions & compulsions that are time-consuming, cause significant distress, & substantially get in the way of life. Obsessions are typically intrusive and unwanted thoughts, images, sensations, or urges & result in feelings of intense anxiety. As a result, those with OCD typically engage in compulsions, which are usually ritualistic or repetitive behaviors, in an attempt to alleviate or rid the distress/anxiety one feels.

What is ERP?

Exposure and Response Prevention is an evidence-based treatment for OCD which involves intentional exposure to the feared thought or stimuli while resisting acting on the compulsive behaviors. ERP is known as the "gold-standard" for OCD treatment and is best done with a trained therapist. I work with clients to tackle ERP at a pace that feels comfortable for them while still holding them accountable to meet their therapy goals.

What is ERP for OCD?

ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention) is the gold standard for treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It is derived from CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). ERP uses intentional exposure to practice confronting the intrusive thoughts, emotions, images, situations, and objects and making an intentional choice to not engage in the compulsive behavior (response prevention). ERP is a tool that is taught in therapy so that you, the client, can utilize ERP on your own outside of therapy. ERP teaches us to accept uncertainty which allows the distress to dissolve over time. Many who undergo ERP treatment for OCD find themselves to have significant decreases, or even elimination, of triggering symptoms.
